Sessue Hayakawa: o primeiro sex symbol do cinema

Sessue Hayakawa: cinema’s first sex symbol

Before Rudolph Valentino graced the screen, there was another exotic sex symbol and superstar: Sessue Hayakawa. You wouldn’t have thought he was such a big deal in the 1910s by watching his later work from the 1950s. My first contact with him was this: as a supporting player in “House of Bamboo” (1955), in which he failed to make a big impression, and in “The Bridge Over the River Kwai” (1957), for which he did make a big impression - he was even nominated for an Oscar! But things changed when I took part at the Pordenone Silent Film Festival.

It was 2020 and we all were stuck in our houses. The Pordenone Silent Film Festival had to adapt to the “new normal” and offered an online version of the usual festival. One of the movies shown was “Where Lights Are Low”(1921), starring Hayakawa. Yes, it had yellowface and that detail was awful, but Hayakawa’s performance was subdued and made us root for him. I knew I had to watch more of him, and the opportunity finally arrived. I found seven movies starring him on YouTube and Internet Archive, made between 1914 and 1919, his most popular period. Only one of them is a short film, although the features are not very long, lasting about 50 minutes each. Accompany me as I get to know more about cinema’s first sex symbol.

Hayakawa was born in 1886 in Japan, and chose the stage name Sessue, that means “snowy continent”. While touring the United States with a theater company in 1913, he was spotted by Thomas Ince and offered the chance to work in movies. From his first year as a movie performer comes “The Last of the Line” (1914), sometimes also called “Pride of Race”. In it, he plays Tiah, the son of an Indian chief! His father, Chief Gray Otter, had sent him to absorb all of the white man’s knowledge, but Tiah becomes a drunkard instead. He even sides with a group of renegades to rob the paymaster’s stagecoach, but Chief Gray Otter will try to change the narrative about his son’s intentions. It’s a bittersweet short film, one that showcases more of Joe Goodboy’s acting skills as Chief Gray Otter than Hayakawa, and also a film that inspired Martin Scorsese during the making of “Killers of the Flower Moon” (2023).

One of the films that cemented Hayakawa’s popularity right away was “The Wrath of the Gods”, also from 1914. The film can be found under another title, although rarer: “The Destruction of Sakura-Jima” and it tells the love story between Toya San (Tsuru Aoki, Hayakawa’s future real-life wife), who is said to be cursed, and Tom Wilson (Frank Borzage, future film director), a sailor who was left ashore when his ship sank during a typhoon. Hayakawa, not even thirty yet, plays Toya’s elderly father. When Toya and Tom get married, a volcano erupts. There is a subplot about how Buddha is a bad god because he curses people, and the Christian good is a good god because he’s all love. It’s curious how audiences are not supposed to be angry about a mixed-raced couple like Toya and Tom, but to root for them.

In 1915, Hayakawa was already a star, but he would become a real sensation when he appeared in Cecil B. DeMille’s “The Cheat”. Much like Valentino’s “The Sheik” (1921), this movie exploits an interracial “romance”. Hayakawa is Haka Arakau, a Burmese ivory king living the good life in the US, where he befriends social butterfly Edith Hardy (Fannie Ward). Edith loses all the money - ten thousand dollars! - raised by her friends to the Red Cross and Haka comes to her rescue, but she has a price to pay for the loan: to become his sex slave. Nothing really happens between the two, but the scene of him dominating and marking her made many women swoon. “The Cheat” was clearly conceived as a vehicle for Fannie Ward, whose name comes above the title, but it was Sessue who turned many heads.

Another movie Hayakawa made for DeMille was “The Secret Game”, from 1917 - yes, made during First World War. In it, the actor plays Nara-Nara, an agent from the Japanese Secret Service and a “sincere friend to America”. He has to secure some plans about ships, keeping them far from the German spies Dr Smith (Charles Ogle) and Kitty Little (Florence Vidor). The problem is that Nara-Nara falls in love with Kitty, in a complex story that gives Hayakawa material for a solid performance.

In 1918 Hayakawa formed his own production company, Haworth Pictures, under which he started receiving the payment of two million dollars per year, besides becoming the producer of his own films. In “His Birthright” (1918), Hayakawa is Yukio, a Japanese man whose father was an American. To avenge his mother’s death, Yukio goes to the US and gets involved in an espionage plot after being hypnotized by the beautiful spy Edna Kingston (Marin Sais). The climax is an exciting fight scene!

Para a Haworth Pictures Hayakawa fez em 1919 “The Tong Man”.

For Haworth Pictures Hayakawa made in 1919 “The Tong Man”. Set in Chinatown, this movie has Hayakawa as Luk Chen, a powerful opium smuggler who is in love with Sen Chee (Helen Jerome Eddy) and receives the mission to kill a store owner. This action-packed featurette has as its highlight a rooftop persecution, but unfortunately these are overshadowed by some racist title cards.

Also for Haworth Pictures, “The Dragon Painter” (1919) was based on a novel of the same name. Hayakawa plays Tatsu, a near-savage painter who believes his fiancée has been transformed into a dragon one thousand years before. He paints as a way of searching her. One day, his friend Uchida (Toyo Fujita) takes Tatsu to see the great painter Kano Indara (Edward Peil Sr), who is looking for a successor. Tatsu falls in love with the painter’s daughter Ume-Ko (Tsuru Aoki) and accepts to become the painter’s apprentice. The problem is that, after getting married, Tatsu seems to loose his inspiration to paint.
This was my favorite among the films I watched.

The final Hayakawa movie I watched during my investigation was “The Man Beneath”, from 1919, with a very young John Gilbert - here credited “Jack” Gilbert. In it, Hayakawa plays Ashuter, a scientist from India who faces prejudice when in love with a white woman, Kate Erskine (Helen Jerome Eddy). Kate’s sister is engaged to John Gilbert’s character, James. Ashuter helps James fake his own death to escape blackmail. I found a pristine copy of this film on the YouTube channel of the Eye Filmmuseum from the Netherlands. Unfortunately, it had Dutch title cards, which made it difficult to follow the plot.

I stopped my investigation in 1919, the year in which D.W. Griffith made “Broken Blossoms”, a box-office smash with Richard Barthelmess in yellowface. The anti-Japanese sentiment was also growing - it would reach its climax with World War II - so Hayakawa decided to go to the stage, appearing in several plays in the following years in Japan and Europe. After helping the Resistance during the Second World War, when he was living in France, Hayakawa returned to Hollywood. As the Hays Code prohibited mixed-race romances on screen, he could play only villains and supporting characters. In 1967, Hayakawa retired from acting and became a Zen Buddhist master, dying six years later. About his typecasting in the silent era and the urge to change that, he once declared:

"Such roles are not true to our Japanese nature... They are false and give people a wrong idea of us. I wish to make a characterization which shall reveal us as we really are."

Announcing the Fourth Luso World Cinema blogathon

It’s just the most wonderful time of the year again! No, not Christmas - although I love Christmas - it’s time to announce this year’s Luso World Cinema blogathon! The event enters its fourth year with the usual and dedicated hostesses, Letícia (or Le - that’s me) from Crítica Retrô and Beth from Spellbound with Beth Ann.

Just like last year, we scheduled the blogathon around May 5th, that is World Portuguese Language Day, a date established by UNESCO to celebrate the first meeting of the Ministers of Culture of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries that happened on May 5th, 2005.

Aniki Bóbó (1942)

Now, let’s talk more about the blogathon rules:

The Luso World Cinema Blogathon once again accepts posts about films made in Lusophone countries, that is, countries that speak Portuguese – see the list below –, and film stars with Luso heritage, that means, film stars of Portuguese descent. This list includes natives like Carmen Miranda, Rodrigo Santoro, Sônia Braga, Raul Roulien, Maria de Medeiros and also Keanu Reeves, Mary Astor, Louise Fazenda, Tom Hanks, Joe DeRita, James Franco, Daniel Brühl, Auli'i Cravalho (the voice of Disney's Moana!), Nestor Paiva, Amy Poehler,  Dorothy DeBorba and many more you can find listed HERE. You can write an overview of those people's lives or careers or focus on a specific film or TV show they made. We also accept the quite rare portraits of Portuguese, Brazilian or other Luso people in film, like in 1937’s “Captain Courageous”, in which Spencer Tracy plays a Portuguese sailor, for instance.

Here are a few lists of movies from Lusophone countries:

The Great Buster: A Celebration (2018)

One of the reasons for the success of the New Hollywood – a name used to refer to filmmakers who started in the late 1960s and early 1970s – was that they weren’t only filmmakers: they were also cinephiles. The maximum example is Martin Scorsese, who even has a foundation to preserve and restore old films, and in documentaries, just like in his fiction films, has demonstrated his passion for the History of Cinema. Peter Bogdanovich is another name from New Hollywood who loved classic movies – so much that he paid tribute more than once to screwball comedies. Bogdanovich’s last film was a documentary about the great Buster Keaton, a very informative film about this unforgettable icon.

We, Buster Keaton fans, know all the basics. Buster was born in 1895 and, as a baby, joined his parents on stage. He grew up as a popular vaudevillian, becoming, before he turned 10, the star of the Keatons’ act with his falls – falls that might have inspired Houdini to give him the nickname Buster. In 1917 he enters the movie world with Roscoe Arbuckle, who would become his professor and close friend, and in 1920 he made his first feature, “The Saphead”.

Walter Kerr, a famous writer, said that watching Buster’s first released solo short, “One Week”, is like seeing a garden in the exact moment of blooming. All his shorts are mentioned and we see clips of them, proving that Buster, in his mid-20s, was already a genius filmmaker.

Buster never worked with a script during the 1920s. He knew the beginning and the ending of his films, but, as he said, “the middle would take care of itself”. This changes when he joins MGM, and his career suffers. At the same time, Keaton has to face the end of the silent era, the end of his marriage, his drinking addiction and a new way of making pictures at MGM.

There are several newspaper headlines shown throughout Keaton’s life and career, including some from the time he was fired from MGM and had a nervous breakdown, which made him be hospitalized. Newspapers said that he would retire and never work again in film, which proved to be a lie after he became sober again. He finds work again with Educational Pictures and later Columbia, but the movies he makes at that time are so bad that Keaton himself calls them “cheaters”.

Luckily, Buster is saved by his last marriage. In 1940 he weds Eleanor Norris, who becomes Eleanor Keaton, and she is his biggest cheerleader. She supports him through bad and also when things start to look good again, with Keaton appearing at an international circus, on TV, making commercials and cameos in film.

There is something new in the documentary even for old fans like me. I had never seen some commercials Buster did, as well as his “This is Your Life” TV episode, in which he’s deeply moved. This is proof that there is always more about Buster to be rediscovered and written about. The documentary also takes a bold turn by choosing to tell Buster’s whole life and then analyze the ten films - ten masterpieces! - he made in the 1920s.

Buster was nicknamed “the great stone face”, but the documentary reminds us that he had very expressive eyes, a feature that was like gold for silent cinema. And not only for that: director Jon Watts, from “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017), tells us that he was inspired by Buster to create the emotions of an also stone-faced Spider-Man, whose face is covered by a mask.

The “talking heads” in the documentary are many: friends of Keaton, such as Dick Van Dyke, actors, such as Bill Hader and Mel Brooks, directors, like Werner Herzog and Tarantino, stuntmen, historians, like Leonard Maltin, and researchers. They all talk about how Buster influenced their works, especially his super-human stunts.

O produtor do documentário é Charles S. Cohen. Bogdanovich escreveu, dirigiu e narrou o documentário.

The producer of the documentary is Charles S. Cohen. According to Bogdanovich, Cohen got the rights over Keaton’s oeuvre and offered the filmmaker the opportunity to make a documentary with all the archival footage he got – an offer Peter, or anyone, couldn’t refuse. Bogdanovich wrote, directed and narrated the documentary.

In an interview to Ben Mankiewicz on TCM, Bogdanovich said that making this documentary was a joy and – polemic! – that Keaton is better than Chaplin because Chaplin’s humor was too Victorian, while Keaton’s humor was modern. Nevertheless, there was a lovely relationship between them: Eleanor Keaton claimed that Chaplin treated Keaton like a king when they shot their only appearance together, in “Limelight” (1952).

Leonard Maltin says that Buster Keaton always gave 100% of his efforts to all the things he did. That’s why he succeeded in his ultimate goal: to make us laugh – which he keeps doing despite it’s been 100 years since his heyday. This is why he is the Great Buster.

This is my contribution to the 10th Annual Buster Keaton blogathon, hosted by Lea at Silent-ology.

Zardoz (1974)

I first heard about the movie “Zardoz” (1974), starring Sean Connery, when it was shown in a midnight screening at the TCM Film Festival in 2017. These midnight screening are fun-filled events showcasing so-bad-it’s-good movies. At the occasion, a film fan even brought Zardoz cookies for the audience. I had no cookies when watching “Zardoz”, but I certainly had an interesting experience.

An immortal being. A fake God by occupation and a magician by inclination. This is Arthur Frayn (Niall Buggy), living in a huge floating head – Zardoz – that gives orders to barely-dressed soldiers and then vomits guns. Arthur is killed by the exterminator Zed (Sean Connery), who then goes to the Vortex, a mythical place where everybody can control him with only one look.

At the Vortex, where they eat green bread, Zed stays to be studied by May (Sara Kestelman), who is researching about human sexuality. He stays despite Consuella’s (Charlotte Rampling) protests, as she knows that “the monster”, as they call Zed, will cause a lot of disagreements. May is given seven days to conclude her research, and after that Zed will be sacrificed. But he has a much bigger mission to accomplish.

There is unhappiness in the Vortex because there is no death. Aging is a punishment and the people either become apathetic or live as suffering bohemians. Zed may be their savior, as he makes a quite obvious connection between Zardoz and The Wizard of Oz.

“Zardoz” is set in the year 2293. Science fiction had been since the 1950s a perfect area for the imagination to flow freely, even in B-movies. At that time, more and more people believed they could make films, as directors, actors or multi-hyphenates. The passion for film made people stop being only spectators and converted them into filmmakers – see, for instance, the unforgettable Ed Wood. “Zardoz” is a direct descendant of Wood’s cinema.

But one nice thing we can find even in the worst sci-fi movies are the cool gadgets. In “Zardoz” everybody in the Vortex has a ring that talks, answers questions and projects holograms. We learn from one simple Google search that tech companies are already making “smart rings”. Such gadgets serve to measure health statistics, such as sleep pattern, cardiac rhythm, stress level and body temperature.

Sean Connery had difficulty finding good roles after his James Bond years. Here, he is either wearing the ridiculous exterminator uniform or is disguised as a bride! His luck would only change in the mid-80s, with “The Name of the Rose” – for which he won a Bafta – and “The Untouchables” – that gave him an Oscar. The other “Zardoz” lead, Charlotte Rampling, was not trying to venture into different roles, but did the film because it was “poetry. It clearly states: love your body, love nature, and love what you come from”.

The movie was written, produced and directed by John Boorman. He had a big hit in 1972 with “Deliverance” and then had tried to film an adaptation of the Lord of the Rings saga, and it was during the preparation for his aborted movie that he started writing “Zardoz”. Über-confident, Boorman defined his creation as “closer to the better science fiction literature which is more metaphysical. Most of the science fiction that gives the genre a bad name is adventure stories in space clothes”.

It makes a lot of sense when we learn that John Boorman confessed he used drugs while writing and directing several scenes in the movie. It also makes sense that the infamous costumes were made by Boorman’s wife, Christel Kruse, not a professional stylist. A film with a cult following, but one I don’t want to watch again: as I felt it to be too long and sometimes pointless, I’m happy to say I’ve experienced “Zardoz” – with or without cookies.
